Donald James Yates, 56, of Seattle, Washington, passed away unexpectedly on April 22, 2025, due to complications from strep throat. Donald was born in Ventura, California on December 7, 1968. An accomplished hairdresser with a keen “eye for color” and a sophisticated aesthetic, his work was a true reflection of his vibrant spirit. Even after leaving the profession, he continued to share his creative vision and designs with those around him. Donald’s lifelong love for the arts eventually led him to the front of house at the 5th Avenue Theatre and later to his role as an usher at the City of Seattle’s McCaw Hall, where he welcomed countless patrons with his characteristic professionalism and attention to detail.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Kelton. He is survived by his cousin, Scott Spagnola, of Spokane, his faithful canine companion, Frankie, and a wide circle of friends whom he embraced as his family of choice. Donald deeply valued his relationships and will be remembered for the love he gave to and received from both humans and animals alike.
Donald was interred in the columbarium at the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery in Edmonds, Washington. Frankie has moved to the Shoreline area, a place he was familiar with, and he has settled in and rules the roost. He will turn five years old on March 24, 2026.
