Barbara Jean Skok, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on April 19, 2024. She was born on January 24, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Frederick and Margaret Rumball. Barbara grew up in Minneapolis, where she developed a passion for education and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1946 with a degree in Education. During her time at the university, she showcased her musical talents by playing the clarinet in the U of M marching band, never missing a football game performance.

Driven by her adventurous spirit, Barbara moved to Ontario, California, to embark on her teaching career, before being drawn to the opportunities in Alaska in 1950. She and her future maid of honor drove up to Alaska and settled in Palmer, just outside of Anchorage, where she met her husband, Jasper. They married in 1952 and were blessed with three children.

In 1962, Barbara and her family relocated to Mercer Island, Washington, to be closer to relatives. There, she devoted her time to raising her children while also pursuing a part-time career selling WorldBook Encyclopedia. After her husband’s passing, Barbara moved to Skyline Retirement Community in 2010, where she remained active in various activities, including Mahjong and bingo. She had a deep love for dogs and enjoyed interacting with them during her walks, always carrying treats to share with her furry friends.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Theresa (Doug), sons Mark (Ana) and Brian (Charlotte), grandsons Nicholas and Travis, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Valley, Washington, where he grew up. Details regarding the internment ceremony will be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mary’s Place, St. James Cathedral, or Habitat for Humanity, in Barbara’s memory. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will continue to live on.
