Helen Mae (Hammack) Whitney passed away February 3, 2022, in her sleep at the age of 86. She had suffered a long illness of vascular dementia following a stroke in November of 2015.

Helen was born in Kansas City, Kansas on May 1, 1935, to George and Gladys (Brooks) Hammack. The family of eight moved to Richland, Washington in 1942 for her father’s new job at the Hanford Site during World War 11. Helen attended Richland High School where she was very active in at least one of the school choirs. She played piano from a young age and had a beautiful singing voice. Although she attended Kennewick High School her senior year due to her family’s move, she always considered Richland High School “her school”.

Helen moved to Yakima, Washington in 1964 and then to Kirkland, Washington in 1983. She easily made friends wherever she lived and always had an active social life. Her hobbies included reading, playing piano, entertaining and decorating.

Helen is survived by her children Jim Davis of Wenatchee, John Davis of Kennewick, Tana Anderson of Sammamish, Cara Hunt of Tacoma, her grandchildren Michael Davis of Henderson, Kelsey Harris of Umatilla, Sean (Stacey) Davis of Richland, Whitney (Tim) Angevine of Spokane and Eva Anderson of Sammamish. Helen is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Raelyn, Kaitlyn, Brandyn, Mila, Maci and Silas Davis.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys (Brooks) Hammack, Siblings Thelma Sullivan, George Hammack, Betty (Hammack) Polk, Henry Hammack, Clarence Hammack, and Frederick Hammack, son-in-law Rick Hunt and great-grandchild, Jocelyn Davis.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Terrace Heights Memorial Park Cemetery in Yakima, Washington. Donations may be made to the American Stroke Association, the Dementia Society of America or the charity of your choice.
