I just saw Sam’s name in the Minnesota Law School magazine in the ‘in memoriam’ section and my heart sank. I did not know Sam well but he was in my class and was my opposing counsel during moot court. I remember he was such a warm guy. Before our big oral argument we were both a little nervous. Can’t remember whose idea it was, but we had about an hour to kill so we went across the street to the bar, drank some whiskey together, and got to know each other better before we argued. It was one of my favorite moments of grad school. I must say if all lawsuits started with a lowball and a friendly conversation the world would probably be a much better place 🙂 I am so sorry you have lost a wonderful husband, son, friend and brother.

During my time at Valparaiso University, I joined Sigma Phi Epsilon. Sam was one of the first people to welcome me. Sam was one of the most dynamic and adventurous people I have known. I don’t think I have ever had a boring conversation with him. It truly makes me sad to know that he is no longer with us. My condolences and prayers to Angela and all of Sam’s family.

During our semester abroad in Germany in college, Sam introduced me to bourbon. While it took another 12 years or so for it to grow on me I credit him with getting that ball rolling. It was the first of many things that Sam would introduce me to over the years including Texas Hold’Em, The Boondocks Saints, Super Troopers, World of Warcraft, fantasy hockey, and TIVO. I will always remember Sam as a truly loyal friend who would do anything for those he cared about. He was a good man….and thorough.

In the few years we knew Sam he was our colleague, peer, mentor and friend. His life was one of contrasts, changes and variety and his joviality, pragmatism and calm in the face of his fate was an inspiration and a joy of which to be a small part. We've lost a good person. Rest in peace, Sam.

In the brief amount of time I worked with Sam, I got to know that he was one of those humans that shine bright in all of the lives he touched. I know he will be greatly missed and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Sam was a charming, deeply principled, humble, and very intelligent man—a nephew dear to my heart and a beloved cousin to our daughters. We are honored that he and Angela were part of our lives. We will love him forever. One in hope and one in heart, we hope to meet again.

What a great tribute to a special guy, who made his family whole. Sam packed so much life into his way too short time on this earth. He was brilliant, creative, always incredibly generous, and loyal. He never stopped being fun to be around, and we share with you the hole it leaves that he is no longer with us. He was blessed to have such wonderful parents, brothers, and a loving wife. We were proud to call him our nephew. Angela, you are, and will always be a part of our family. We grieve for you and hold you in our hearts.
